Minutes with advisor

Advisor: Professor Notash

5/8/20

Initial Meeting

Deniz and Evan were officially assigned to be partners for their Senior Design Projects by Professor Notash in a Zoom meeting. Professor Notash discussed with the class about course expectations, getting contacts of various students in Professor Notash's class as well as Dr. Ejaz's students.

Professor Notash gave the students the rubrics for the Senior Design Report, webpage, presentation as well the Senior Design Proposal Report Template (2 Hrs)

5/14/20

Class Meeting

The team pitched their three proposal ideas of a Touchless Door, Dual-Axis Solar Panel, and a Modular Mechanical Keyboard to Professor Notash and in front of the class via Zoom.

The team initially proposed the idea of a Dual Axis Solar Panel that rotates with relationship to the position of the Sun in order to maximize power storage. Then the Modular Mechanical Keyboard was pitched with the idea being a fully modular approach to the computer keyboard for people working in various industries at home. Finally, the Touchless Door was pitched to the class with the premise of creating a electronic door that opens and closes via voice recognition. After the presentation of the pitched ideas, Professor Notash stated the possible inclusion of opening the door via a keyless card and application. The group took notes from students and advisor Professor Notash.(3 Hrs)

Class Meeting

Had a class meeting with Professor Notash as he answered student questions and concerns. Major questions include how the Progress Log, Time and Effort, and Engineering Specification for the webpage. After the questions he went over the student's websites as well our group's. He gave the group a thorough description of what needed to be added to the website. From his recommendations, the group began working on updating the website. Professor Notash's feedback and recommendations included properly including the Progress Log, Engineering Specification, and Weekly Minutes into the webpage.    (2 Hrs)

6/07/20

Email Discussion

Friday (06/05/20) the group submitted their weekly progress report and by Sunday (06/07/20) Professor Notash was very quick to give constructive feedback about what was missing from the report and what should be updated on the website. His feedbacks included including the Senior Design Proposal Report onto the website and to continue adding onto it throughout the week. Other feedback included featuring a 'Minutes with Advisor' tab, all weekly progress reports, researched reference links and removing the "Estimated Real Projected Budget" table from the "Proposed Budget & Timeline" tab.  Thus, work was done from his recommendations. (1.5 Hrs)

Zoom

Meeting

The team had a Zoom meeting with Professor Notash to discuss the current state of the project and to have specific questions answered. The concerns included about whether using a Raspberry Pi 3b vs a Arduino UNO/DUE, concerns about using a keycard for door opening, and safety measures in case the power goes out.

Professor Notash cleared up some misinformation regarding the Raspberry Pi 3b, regarding if the power went out that it could potentially corrupt the file. Professor Notash introduced the idea of possibly incorporating the Raspberry Pi and Arduino together in the project but as of this date, the team is leaned towards using the Arduino since the team believes the extra IO pins and easy & straightforward IDE of the Arduino is more effective for this project.

After concerns with safety regarding keycards, Professor Notash stated that it is possible to create a secure keycard with research about proximity reader operations. Regarding concerns in case of power outage, the idea of incorporating a rechargeable battery to operate the linear actuator.

After answering the team's questions, Professor Notash wanted to go over the team's website. Feedbacks included were a lack of a detailed "Progress Log" & "Minutes With Advisor" tabs on the website, adding Voltage/Current/Power Consumption values to the Engineering Specifications column of the "Engineering Requirements" tab.  Professor Notash also gave references from previous Senior Design students.

Zoom

Meeting

Professor Notash requested all teams have meetings with him on Mondays at select times. Our team had had a meeting four days prior to gain insight from Professor Notash. We had been asked to provide more pictures to our updates to give a better visual to any onlookers as well as for the team to reflect on our progression. Stated improvements to the website which had been made by this meeting and to add a power budget. Reconfirmed Aurdino would be the processing unit utilized in this build.

Zoom

Meeting

The team and professor Notash held a weekly Zoom meeting at 4:30 pm. The main focus of the meeting was to have professor Notash review the team's website and proposal report updates. Notash's main feedbacks included to improve on the power budget by researching and comparing to professional power budgets. The team's power budget was similar to a document instead of professor Notash's intended data table. Professor Notash recommended to also not underestimate power consumption regarding components. It is better to over-estimate than to under-estimate. Other feedbacks include, including links for posted videos, make the site more user-friendly and restructure the project timeline and proposed budget.

Professor Notash reviewed over the Proposal Report and gave the feedback of fixing some structural issues of the report format. Overall, Notash stated he was impressed with the work done this week.

Zoom

Meeting

The team held a weekly meeting with Professor Notash, and discussed the progress that was made during the week. This week's meeting included going over the website, report and door. The team went over the updated website wit Professor Notash who made specific feedbacks regarding if the team can use html editing to clean up the Engineering Specification table. Professor Notash was using Mozilla FireFox that enables the user to edit the page's aspects. The team will do their best effort to make sure the format of the table is clean and properly presentable. Professor Notash also stated that the team should work on creating a Power Budget to be put on the website.

Professor Notash briefly went over the team's proposal report in which his feedback included: Renaming the project to a more accurate title, fixing formatting throughout the report, and updating chapter 3.
